In Her Place
In Her Place: Nashville Artists in the Twenty-First Century at the Frist Art Museum is a contemporary art exhibition celebrating the work of twenty-eight women artists based in Nashville, Tennessee. As the Curatorial and Publications Assistant for the exhibition, I played an active role in developing and producing the accompanying catalogue, working closely with artists to document their practices, perspectives, and contributions to the local art community.
My responsibilities included researching and writing artist biographies, coordinating and assisting with artist interviews, gathering biographical information and supporting materials, securing image reproduction rights, and assisting with the art direction of catalogue photography. Through interviews, correspondence, and ongoing collaboration, I developed personal connections with each artist, gaining a deeper understanding of their individual experiences, artistic processes, and the ideas informing their work. I helped translate these conversations and research into written materials that reflected each artist’s distinct voice and practice.
I also supported the catalogue’s editorial and production process, collaborating on the presentation of texts and images to create a cohesive publication that foregrounds the breadth and diversity of contemporary women’s art in Nashville. This project strengthened my experience in curatorial research, artist relations, interpretive writing, and art publishing, while reinforcing my belief in the importance of building meaningful relationships with artists and creating opportunities for their work and stories to be seen.
